Shorten your URLs

Hi all,

One of my favorite features in MOODLE is the ability to link directly to any tool or conversation within the site. A user simply needs to browse to the activity or resource of interest and copy the URL from of the address bar. Unfortunately however, these addresses can be very long and complicated. For example a folder of fraction resources within the Mathematics Resource Moodle generates the following addresses:

http://moodle.fsd38.ab.ca/mod/resource/view.php?id=1080

Instead, wouldn’t it be great to create a small URL that is easy to deliver to students?

Enter http://tinyurl.com.

This tool will accept any complicated internet address such as the one above, and convert it into a simple – easy to email format.

For example if I browse to http://tinyurl.com and paste the URL above into the Enter a long URL to make tiny box, then enter a simple mathtools-fractions into the “custom alias” box, I get the much simpler address:

http://tinyurl.com/mathtools-fractions

Which is much easier to deliver by email.  This tool will work to shorten any URL including complicated youtube links, individual news articles, video streams, etc.  It’s also a great way to send links via length limited resources like twitter.
